Ofcom has revealed this week that half of young people in the UK are now abandoning traditional scheduled TV and instead turning to the internet to consume television content.
For half of 16-24 year olds, streaming shows via online services is now the preferred way to watch television; making more use of online platforms such as All 4, ITV Player, SkyGo and Youtube than live TV.
The proportion of UK adults watching traditional live TV still remains high at 69%, however this share dropped to 61% for 25-34’s and only 50% for 16-24 year olds! Online services give the viewer greater choice and flexibility in terms of how they consume content, and studies have attempted to analyse this shift in sentiment towards online.
The ‘Truth about youth’ study commissioned by Thinkbox shed some light on these new attitudes, identifying three interlinking aspects which influence how this group consume different types of TV.
The research revealed some enlightening perspectives about the roles and different needs of this age group being met by online video services. Factors such as increased free time, competing TV demands and virtual social maintenance were described as influencers in the shift of attitude towards consuming online TV.
