The Media Angel Take Home Best Advertising Campaign Award
We are delighted to announce that we have won Best Advertising Campaign at this years CIM Chartered Institute of Marketing Wales/Cymru Awards 2016 held at Portland House in Cardiff Bay on 23 November.
Our innovative advertising campaign that we implemented for National Botanic Garden of Wales was to help them increase visitor numbers and promote new attractions including The Butterfly House / Plas Pilipala. To help achieve this we developed a family focussed, integrated campaign that ran throughout summer 2016. As a result the campaign that included video, radio, online and outdoor marketing, increased family visits by 68%.
David Hardy, Head of Marketing and Communications for National Botanic Garden of Wales said: “We are delighted to have won “Best Advertising Campaign” for our Butterfly House with The Media Angel who did a fantastic job, we are still reaping the benefits of their excellent work today.”
The CIM’s prestigious Wales Marketing Awards highlight industry excellence and celebrate the achievements of marketing professionals in Wales. The award for “Best Advertising campaign” recognised a campaign that used striking creativity and strategic planning to reach and engage a family audience. The channels used and results delivered against the campaign objectives really impressed the judges.
On winning this accolade Managing Director Alison Debono said: “We are thrilled to have won this CIM Award. This campaign highlights that great results and a good return on investment can be achieved with limited budget, creativity and by selecting the most appropriate media mix to deliver the campaign objectives. We are beyond happy that our work has been recognised once again on a National basis”

CIM’s prestigious Wales Marketing Awards (previously known as Canmol) rewards excellence and celebrates achievements of marketing professionals in Wales giving individuals, teams and organisations the recognition they deserve. These awards are a fantastic acknowledgement of the creativity and originality delivered by marketers who are at the forefront of their profession and recognises the success of all those involved.
This year 36 entries have been shortlisted for 12 Awards across all sectors including Welsh brands such as Dwr Cymru- Welsh Water, Public Health Wales, Cadw and Braces Bread as well as two of our clients, National Botanic Garden of Wales and ACT Training LTD.
The National Botanic Garden of Wales, based in Carmarthenshire needed to increase their visitor numbers after a number of years of flat-lining figures. In order to achieve this goal their objectives were to concentrate on increasing family visitors: following the creation of new family offerings, which culminated in the opening of The Butterfly House, Plas Pilipala, we composed a campaign to publicise this new offering to family with children across South and West Wales. A creative multi-faceted campaign which encompassed video, online quizzes and message reiteration across outdoor advertising and radio, created a social buzz and an overall increase of family footfall up a massive 68% over the summer holidays.
David Hardy – Head of Marketing and Communications for National Botanic Garden Wales said “We are delighted to be shortlisted for two awards for our Butterfly House campaign with The Media Angel who did a fantastic job…we are still reaping the benefits of their excellent work today”
ACT Training, Wales’ leading training provider’s objective was to hit their traineeship recruitment target. ACT and The Media Angel devised the #BEYanapprentice campaign to help achieve this goal. Jayne McGill-Harris, senior marketing and PR Manager of ACT Training Ltd says
“One of the main marketing challenges we face each year is how we can compete with huge FE and HE organisations that have much larger marketing budgets and a larger voice in the market compared to ourselves. In order to inject some originality and imagination into our marketing communications activity, we hired The Media Angel as an extension of the team.
Between us, an integrated campaign that included an experiential marketing stunt, as well as online advertising and a promotion, was planned to achieve a competitive advantage and provide a memorable brand experience for prospective learners.”
A Beyonce lookalike was hired and a buzz created around Cardiff on the day of Beyonce’s concert in June. “Beyonce” engaged with concert goers encouraging them to enter a competition and post pictures on social media ensuring high levels of exposure and data capture from their target audience. This highly successful campaign attracted 63% increase in new traffic to their website and ultimately achieved 830 enquiries- an increase of 40%.
Our Managing Director Alison Debono says
“We are beyond thrilled to be shortlisted again this year for 4 awards at CIM’s Wales Marketing Awards. We are the only media planning and buying agency in Wales to achieve this accolade. The two very different campaigns that we have been shortlisted for highlight that great results and a good return on investment are achievable with limited budgets, creative imaginations and by selecting the most appropriate media mix to deliver the campaign objectives.”
Alison further says “Both campaigns for ACT Training Ltd and National Botanic Garden of Wales are fitting case studies that underpin the essence of our work and how we can help clients develop an innovative approach to marketing to help them STAND OUT and get results”

Brands are losing consumer trust on social media
Recent research conducted by YouGov for the Chartered Institute of Marketing, shows 25% of consumers claimed to have seen a fake online review, increased from 17% when the survey was last conducted in 2014. Also, 21% (up from 14% in 2014) of consumers say they have seen a brand incentivising customers to share positive comments on social media without making it clear to the users, with 16% saying that brands pay someone for promotion without payment being declared.
“This has led to consumers querying if what they are seeing is genuine. There is a growing awareness of certain practices out there, brands should be wary,” says CIM CEO Chris Daly.
Brands social media platforms are losing trust with consumers. 30% say they have little or no trust in the brand information they view on Facebook, 20% rise since 2014. The increase is matched across Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn.
Brands should be concerned as social media is a key source of information for consumers when making purchase decisions. When questioned by CIM, 62% of people said they now ‘Often’ or ‘occasionally’ use social media when deciding whether to make a purchase.
“Consumers are looking for reassurance on social media that the restaurant they have booked for a special occasion or laptop they are thinking of buying is the right choice.
“Creating a degree of transparency and honesty will make brands appear authentic and boost loyalty.” – Chris Daly, CEO, CIM
The Advertising Standards Authority has undertaken work to engage with, raise awareness of and produce advice and training to marketers. 52% of marketers have little or no understanding of regulations about marketing on social media,“We take a dim view of marketers who ignore the ad rules,” says an ASA spokesman. “They risk having their ad banned and the resulting negative publicity and damage to their brand and could land them in hot water with the CMA for potentially breaking the law.”
“With consumers increasingly expecting a two-way conversation, brands must be far more honest and authentic in trying to build that trust and engender customer loyalty,” says Daly. “Brands that try to cut corners or be disingenuous will be found out through social media.”
CIM has issued guidelines to help brands navigate social media. These include making sure marketers know the rules, are equipped with the right skills and knowledge, have a social media policy and talk about it with customers.

Proud finalists at CIM Marketing Excellence Awards
What a fantastic time we had at the CIM Excellence in Marketing Awards 2016 last Thursday 14 April at the beautiful Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
I am so proud to have seen The Media Angel up alongside some amazing brands in the finals. Our ‘Legacies’ campaign with Ty Hafan was nominated with the likes of O2, Direct Line, Camelot, Bupa, PWC UK, Legal and General, Vision Express, Jewson, Visit Britain and Santander as an example of excellence in marketing across the UK. With our Legacies campaign achieving a ROI of over 300% for life limited children at Ty Hafan, we were identified as worthy finalists demonstrating a commitment to marketing innovations within the SME category. All finalists were celebrated for the creativity and originality of their campaigns, paying special respects to the positive impact that great marketing can have on an organisation; much like our Ty Hafan Legacies case study.
There were 24 categories rewarding the breadth of marketing excellence across some of the UK’s most respected brands. I couldn’t be more proud of The Media Angel and my team making the finals and representing Wales. Out of around 150 finalists in total, there were only 5 Welsh organisations at this year’s ceremony. To be the only Welsh media planning and buying agency shortlisted in the finals feels like an amazing achievement. Also flying the flag for Wales in the Brand Experience category was our wonderful client Swansea University. Their Making Waves campaign has performed exceptionally well over the past 3 years, increasing in popularity year on year with added thanks to our talented team’s media planning and buying expertise.
I am so very proud of The Media Angel and my team for achieving such huge recognition. Being such a small and hard working agency we are beyond thrilled to be able to say we were the only media planning and buying agency across Wales to win at the CIM Canmol Marketing Awards, and one of few Welsh brands to make the finals at National level in 2016. The past 12 months have been truly amazing for our dedicated team.
We would love to say a huge thank you to all of our clients and friends for their constant and continued support over the past few years, we are so grateful to each and every one of you. Without your support we wouldn’t be where we are today. We love our roles within this exciting and fast paced advertising sector. Each day and each client campaign is so varied, we love the fact we don’t know what we will get asked to work on next. Whatever the campaign and whatever its size, we have a combined industry experience of over 50 years and love to put our heads together to tackle any kind of brief. So if you are looking for some inspiring and innovative ideas then get in touch with our team of experts. #LoveMarketing

The Media Angel finalists in the National CIM Excellence Awards!
We are absolutely overjoyed to announce some very exciting news.
After being the only media planning and buying agency in Wales to win an award at the CIM Canmol Welsh Marketing Excellence Awards in 2015, we have been shortlisted for a marketing award at National level!
Our outstanding work on Tŷ Hafan’s legacy campaign has earned us a place as finalists at the CIM Marketing Excellence Awards 2016, which is set to take place on April 14th at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. Our work has been shortlisted alongside campaigns run by Appletizer, The Happy Egg Company, Virgin Media and O2 to name just a few!
The CIM’s prestigious Marketing Excellence Awards were developed to recognise and reward brilliance in the field of marketing. Now entering its seventh year, these awards are a fantastic way to raise awareness of the creativity and originality delivered by marketers who are at the forefront of the profession. We will be proudly exhibiting their work for Tŷ Hafan, which has already been praised as “simply brilliant” by the judging panel at Canmol.
Tŷ Hafan Legacies have become a key income stream for the charity, generating around 70% of annual individual giving income over the past few years. Our team were appointed to take care of the Legacy campaign on behalf of Tŷ Hafan and devise a campaign that would help the charity raise these vital funds through pledges.
We made innovative use of both new and traditional media marketing methods including video on demand, print press and direct mail to maximise an extremely precious budget. The results were outstanding, generating returns of over 300% for the charity.
Managing Director Alison stated “We are beyond thrilled to be nominated for an award at the CIM Marketing Excellence Awards this year in London! We were over the moon with our Canmol win, and are now so excited to raise the national profile of our small but brilliant organisation and of this case study; which demonstrates what can be achieved from maximising precious budgets, selecting the most affordable and appropriate media.”
“In this case, a simple mix of new digital media and more traditional, popular methods such as press raised the profile of Tŷ Hafan and their schemes for donating to impressive ends – achieving amazing over-delivery on targets. The campaign delivered an overwhelming 300% more than the proposed target and we genuinely feel this case study is an inspiration for charities nationwide. We feel this should be inspiration for other small, hardworking agencies too; we’ve shown that despite being a team smaller in numbers we have the aptitude and dexterity to make a huge difference”.
We are also so delighted for client Swansea University who has been shortlisted for their ‘Making Waves’ campaign; a project we have also been heavily involved in executing.
“We couldn’t be happier for the team at Swansea University for making the shortlist with us; we are super excited to celebrate with them in London on 14th April” says Alison.
We would like to wish all fellow finalists the very best of luck, and we are very much looking forward to a fantastic evening.
The Media Angel win a prestigious Marketing Award!
This year’s CIM Canmol: Wales Marketing Awards was a particularly exciting one for us at The Media Angel. Not only were we delighted when we received the news in October that our work with amazing client Ty Hafan had been nominated for an excellence award in the Life Sciences category, we are also incredibly proud and absolutely delighted to announce that we were successful in winning this award! Ours was the only media planning and buying agency successful in winning at this year’s ceremony.
Our work with Ty Hafan on the Legacy campaign was described as “simply brilliant” by the judging panel, who were extremely impressed by the results generated. The campaign created returns of over 300% for the charity, achieving over £360,000 in pledges on a small budget of just £12,000.
Our team worked so hard to implement a hugely successful yet cost effective campaign using a mix of new and traditional media platforms including video on demand for the first time, print and direct mail. Campaigns were put forward based on their creation and delivery of innovative and effective marketing campaigns delivering outstanding results.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled and excited to have won a Canmol 2015 award for our work with our wonderful client Ty Hafan. I am so proud of this project, helping such a great organisation and important cause receive returns of over 300%. We are delighted to have been rewarded recognition for our work; winning an excellence in marketing award across Wales is absolutely amazing. It’s wonderful to win an award for doing what we love” (Alison Debono, Managing Director at The Media Angel)

We are so proud to have been up alongside some of Wales’ leading brands and would love to extend our congratulations to all the nominees and winners including client Swansea University, DS Smith, JamJar PR and Arriva Trains Wales among other great organisations. We’ve made the finals for a CIM Canmol Marketing Award
We are so thrilled by the news that we have been shortlisted for a 2015 CIM Canmol Marketing Award for our work with children’s hospice charity Tŷ Hafan! The Chartered Institute of Marketing hosts Canmol every year; dedicated to celebrating excellence in Welsh Marketing.
The business and marketing experts on the panel at Canmol felt our work with Tŷ Hafan; helping them raise crucial awareness of the amazing work they undertake for children with life limiting illnesses was worthy of an award nomination.
Tŷ Hafan offers comfort, care and support to life-limited children, young people and their families in the hospice, in the community and in their home so they can make the most of the time they have left together.
Tŷ Hafan established an Individual Giving team in 2012 to generate sustainable income from individuals. Legacies has become a key income stream for Tŷ Hafan, generating around 70% of annual Individual giving income over the past few years. We have been working with the charity since 2014 to help devise, buy and implement their media plans across all projects, including the Legacy promotion.
The campaign focused on how Tŷ Hafan helps life-limited children to leave their priceless mark on the world, and encouraged people to leave their own mark on the world too through leaving a gift in their Will. ‘Leave your Mark’ was the key message to promote this campaign.
We are extremely proud of the fantastic results the campaign achieved from using a simple mix of new digital media in the form of VOD with ITV Player and more traditional, methods such as print, magazines and direct mail. The campaign proved that by using the right mix of new and traditional media, amazing results can be delivered within an affordable cost.
We found this project extremely rewarding, as its outcome has made a real difference to life-limited children and their families in Wales. The campaign contributed to increasing the number of donations the charity needs to be able to continue with their outstanding work. The campaign delivered an overwhelming 300% more than the proposed target, generating on average £360,000 which will go a long way in helping Tŷ Hafan continue to do the brilliant work that they do.
We’d love to send our huge congratulations to all of the finalists, especially to clients Swansea University and Swansea Bay!
We’re also proud to be sponsoring the drinks reception at this year’s Canmol Awards on 6th November for a second year. We are very much looking forward to welcoming all guests with a glass of bubbly to start the evening off to what we are sure will be a great event!
Front row seats at the CIM Canmol Marketing Awards 2014
The Chartered Institute of Marketing’s ‘Canmol’ awards took place last Friday at Cardiff Bay’s St David’s Hotel; announcing 8 companies’ marketing campaigns as well deserved winners of the prestigious awards. The Media Angel attended and presented our full support for the event finalists and winners through sponsorship of the reception welcome.
The successful marketing teams of this year’s ceremony were chosen from an array of Welsh organisations across all sectors; from big renowned Welsh brands to those smaller SME’s and local businesses. Each category winner thoroughly deserved this recognition and celebration of their hard work, creativity and innovative marketing strategies which produced fantastic business results!
Some of this year’s fabulous category winners included Cardiff’s leading provider of commercial legal services Capital Law, Welsh pastry manufacturers Peter’s Food, Swansea Council’s Visit Swansea Bay, Llantrisant based manufacturer of thermal desorption products Markes International, and S4C! The inspirational new marketer award was presented to Irene Hammond, designer of the ‘Show me Where’ communication application; an exciting new pain communication tool for children with autism and speech disabilities.
Once again, the benchmark for Welsh marketing excellence has been set by CIM’s choice of winners. The standards remain extremely high for Welsh marketing, and it is clear that Welsh businesses should be immensely proud of their achievements in such a quality, competitive industry.
The Media Angel had a fantastic night at the awards and would like to congratulate each and every one of the finalists for their outstanding achievements in marketing. We are already excited for what next year’s events have to bring!
Award-winning month for Swansea University!
The Media Angel helps Swansea University achieves award-winning results with student recruitment campaign.
It’s been a fantastic month for our clients Swansea University who won University of the Year at the What Uni Student Choice Awards 2014; what an amazing achievement!
On top of this, they have also been shortlisted for the Heist Awards for their Making Waves Student Recruitment Campaign, so fingers crossed for another win.
We have helped Swansea University with their media planning and buying on their ‘Making Waves’ campaign for the last 2 years, the campaigns include outdoor, online, radio, press and social media.
Of course we can’t forget to mention their victory at the Varsity 2014, beating Cardiff Uni 19-15. An amazing achievement for Swansea all around.
